Matching Your Talent With Your Passion

We’ve all heard at least a million times – follow your passion. I have been preaching it for years. I believe it is the only way that you can feel satisfied in your career. There is nothing worse than working all your life in a job or field that you are apathetic about for just a paycheck. There is power and fulfillment in pursuing your dreams.

However, there is one important factor that should not be overlooked. It is important to match your skills or talents with your passion. You have to love what you do as much as you love where you are doing it. For example, you may love sports, but not be satisfied
writing about it for your local newspaper. However, you may be good at selling and negotiating, so you pursue a career as a sports agent (think Jerry McGuire). You may love flowers and large gardens, but not love being the one who plants them and keeps them up. However, you may be a talented photographer, and develop a career photographing the greatest gardens in the world for National Geographic.

If what you’re doing right now is not making you excited to wake up and get to work every morning, maybe it is time to do an honest assessment of what is really important and what is really fulfilling in your life. Remember that your skills and talents don’t necessarily mean technical expertise. Maybe you are just good with people. Maybe you are a great teacher or encourager. If you’re not sure, ask others what your strengths are. Then find a way to match them with your passion. After all, you only get to live each day once!
